The importance of PE

Physical Education (PE) and sport play a very important part in the life of Knollmead Primary and each class has time dedicated to physical activity in the curriculum.

We believe that physical education and sport contribute to the holistic development of young people and through participation, young people learn more about key values such as teamwork, fair play and respect for themselves and others.

There is significant evidence to show the positive effects of sport and exercise on children’s physical health, growth and development.

Furthermore, sport also provides a healthy environment for young people to learn how to deal with competition and how to cope with both winning and losing. Listed are some of the key skills and benefits from participating in PE:

  • Physical skills

  • Develop self-esteem and self-confidence

  • Fine and gross motor skills

  • Healthy living and wellbeing

  • Behaviour, positive attitudes and team-work

  • Promotes cohesion and inclusion

  • Introduces competition and understanding about winning and losing

  • Develop leadership skills and decision making

At Knollmead Primary School we believe that Physical Education is a very important part of the curriculum and that every child should be offered PE that is challenging, fun and competitive. The children are offered a wide range of sport in curriculum time including dance, gymnastics, hockey, cricket, tag rugby, football, athletics, netball, basketball, and swimming, in our own pool on site. Alongside this the children are taught the fundamental skills that build to develop motor-skill, movement and hand-eye co-ordination.

We provide many opportunities for the children to take part in competitive sports activities and events through our school and Trust partnerships, including the Kingston Schools Sports Partnership (KSSP).

We offer pre and after-school clubs that give the children an opportunity to engage in additional sporting activities. These include football, cricket, gymnastics, tag rugby, basketball, and multi skills.

What is the PE and Sports Grant?

The Education Funding Agency is providing additional funding to each school to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding - provided jointly by the Department for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport - is allocated to Primary School Headteachers. This funding is ring - fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

Knollmead Primary PE and the Sports Grant

Funding for schools is calculated by reference to the number of primary-aged pupils (between the ages of 5 and 11), as recorded in the annual schools census in January.

Purpose of Funding

Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this

Possible uses for the funding might include:

  • hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE

  • supporting and engaging the least active children through new or additional clubs.

  • paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport

  • providing cover to release primary teachers for inter-school competitions or for professional development in PE and sport.

  • purchasing of PE and sports equipment

  • running sports competitions or increasing pupils' participation in School Games

  • buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE and Sport

  • providing some places for pupils on after school sports clubs.

  • funding transport for children to and from sporting events.
